Description
(54) CONTAiNER EMPTYING APPARATUS
(71) We, ZÖLLER-KIPPER G.m.b.H., a
German limited liability company, of Hans Zöller-Strasse 50-60, 6501 Mainz-Laubenheim, Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to apparatus for lifting and tipping a container, for example a refuse container, for emptying its contents into a collecting receptacle, for example a refuse collecting vehicle. The apparatus has a pair of pivot arms which are operated by lifting and tipping mechanism for arcuate unison swinging movement of the arms. The arms take up the container between them and lift it by holding its carrying elements, for example laterally projecting lugs, by means of for example claws at the free ends of the pivot arms. The apparatus includes means to cause the container to tip during the swinging movement of the arms.
In a known such apparatus, see U.S.
Patent No. 2,951,602, a support and locking rod is provided on the pair of pivot arms and extending laterally between them, whilst the first container has a receiving device for the rod in the form of a pair of ear-shaped straps, each of which forms a receiving element. At a predetermined pivoting position of the pair of pivot arms these straps pass over the support and locking rod, due to the arrangement of the carrying elements above the centre of gravity of the first container, and take them into the receiving elements. As the pivot arms are pivoted further upwards all tipping movement of the first container relative to the pair of pivot arms is prevented. If a relatively large tipping angle for the first container is required, then the pair of pivot arms must be provided with a correspondingly large pivoting range. The pair of pivot arms of this known apparatus is therefore equipped with an intermediate joint and a second hydraulic tipping device is effective via this intermediate joint. However, this involves a considerable increase in the amount of mechanism required and thus in the cost of the apparatus.
Apparatus is also known in which the support and locking elements and the receiving elements for them, which are arranged on the first container and on the pair of pivot arms, lie only against one another when the pair of pivot arms are swung upwards, due to the position of the centre of gravity of the first container relative to the lifting lugs, see German Specification No. 1,937,398.
With such an apparatus the container to be emptied can in practice be swung upwards only into a position in which the plane of its opening is approximately vertical.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide an apparatus in which a greater angle can be reached when the container is to be emptied, and in which, in spite of the greater angle, the tipping movement of the container does not commence until after a relatively long lifting movement has been carried out by upward swinging of the pivot arms.
According to this invention there is provided apparatus for lifting and tipping a container for emptying its contents into a collecting receptacle, the appartus compris ing: - a pair of pivot arms operated by lifting and tipping mechanism for arcuate unison swinging movement about a swivel axis, which arms take up the container and are formed so that the container is suspended at the free ends of the pivot arms for lifting and tipping and also for rocking motion about its axis of suspension which is parallel to the swivel axis; and means limiting the rocking motion, induding limiting means mounted on at least one pivot arm and limiting means mounted on the container spaced from the axis of suspension, one limiting means comprising a rocking motion stop member and the other limiting means comprising spaced receiving and retaining devices each shaped to receive and retain the stop member in a respective end position of the rocking motion of the container. In this way the container can tip relative to the pair of pivot arms in either of two directions. Tip
ping of the container relative to the pivot arms in one direction corresponds generally to the relative tipping movement also available with the known apparatus between the container and the pivot arms, until in the known apparatus the elements of the support and locking device come together. In the apparatus of the invention, however, the container is already safeguarded during this one relative tipping movement against falling from the pivot arms, by entry of the stop member into one of the receiving and retaining devices. In addition to the relative tipping movement in one direction, the container can carry out a further tipping movement relative to the pivot arms, in the opposite direction. Thus in the upper phase of lifting the container can be tipped still further, that is, beyond the amount of the tipping angle given by the pivoting range of the pivot arms, in order to improve emptying.
During this further tipping movement the stop member moves into the other receiving and retaining device, so that during the further relative tipping movement the container is again safeguarded against falling from the pivot arms. This is a particular advantage when the container is shaken to and fro by a rapid sequence of swinging movements for assisting complete emptying into the collecting receptacle.
In many cases the position of the centre of gravity of the container relative to its axis of suspension can be made use of when carrying out the further tipping movement.
However, to ensure reliable transition to the further tipping movement, an abutment, which is closer to the swivel axis of the pivot arms than to the free ends thereof, can be provided for the container in the upper tipping position. The abutment can be a catch and abutment lever fitted to a stationary part of the apparatus and capable of gripping the stop member attached to the container. This catch and abutment lever then acts in conjunction with one receiving and retaining device and generally enters together with the stop member into this receiving and retaining device. This does not entail any disturbance for the catch and abutment lever on one hand or the two receiving and retaining devices on the other hand.On the contrary, the stop member contacts the catch and abutment lever when it moves in the space between the two receiving and retaining devices towards the lower one immediately after lifting has been commenced.
The catch and abutment lever therefore promotes reliable transition of the stop member from one receiving and retaining device to the other.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described in greater detail by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in *11:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of apparatus in its initial, lower position and showing a bulk refuse container;
Figure 2 shows the apparatus of Figure 1 in its upper position with the tipped bulk refuse container; and
Figure 3 is a modification of the area marked III in Figure 1.
Figure 1 shows apparatus for lifting a bulk refuse container 1 in its initial, lower position. The container 1 is moved by its carrying elements or lugs 2, arranged on either side, up to the upper jaw or suspension claws 4, so that the container 1 can be lifted up when a pair of pivot arms 5, one at each side, carry out an upward arcuate unison swinging movement. The pivot arms 5 are mounted on a pivot or swivel shaft 6 which is arranged on a bracket 8 welded to a collecting container 7. The container is thus suspended on the lugs 2 in the claws 4 and can rock about its axis of suspension which is parallel to the axis of the shaft 6. By means of a cylinder-piston assembly 9, also fixed to the collecting container 7, the pivot arms 5 can be swung arcuately upwards through more than 900.At each of its four upper corners, the container 1 has a rocking motion stop member 10 in the form of a laterally projecting pin. To the inner surface of each pivot arm 5 a respective pickup device 10a is fitted, and each has upper and lower receiving and retaining devices or elements 11, 12 spaced apart a distance 1 11a; These elements 11, 12 lie on an arc of a circle having as its centre the axis of suspension of the container.
If now the pivot arms 5 are swung arcuately upwards in unison by operation of the cylinder-piston assembly 9 sufficiently far for the container 1 to hang freely in the suspension claws 4, then the lugs 2 will enter the claws 4, and the stop pins 10, located inside the pivot arms 5, will enter the space 1 lea. When the container wheels leave the ground during further upward arcuate movement, the container 1 can carry out a rocking motion relative to the pair of pivot arms 5 in either direction. According to the size of the container 1 or the distribution of its contents, the relevant element 10 of the container 1 is pressed either into the upper receiving and retaining device 11 or into the lower receiving and retaining device 12.
Arranged pivotally between the two devices 11, 12 is a catch-hook 13 for the pin 10, which in its rest position lies in the inlet to the lower device 12, and does not free that inlet until the pivot arms 5 and the container 1 arc pivoted, i.e. moved arcuately upwardly, see Figure 2. The pair of catchhooks 13 (one at each side of the container) prevent excessive rocking motion of the con
tainer 1 during lifting. In addition, in the later pivoting phase of the pivot arms 5 with a short container or with uneven distribution of the load, i.e. when the contents in the front part of the container 1 leads to unbalanced weight, the pin 10 is trapped by the catch-hook 13 before it can enter the lower device 12.
The catch-hook 13 is constructed so that it swings away from the Figure 1 position in the middle of the upward swinging of the pivot arms 5 under the effect of its own weight, and thus releases the pin 10, so that the latter can enter the lower device 12 during the second relative tipping movement, which occurs towards the end of the upward arcuate swinging of the pivot arms 5 (see
Fig. 2).
In some instances the position of the centre of gravity of the container relative to the lugs 2 can be used to cause the further or second tipping movement of the container 1 relative to the pivot arms 5, for emptying the container 1. For reliable transition to this second tipping movement, an abutment 14 or a catch and abutment lever for the container 1 in the upper tipped position (Fig. 2) is provided, which is closer to the swivel axis of the pair of pivot arms 5 than to the claws 4. As can be seen, the abutment 14 is arranged on a stationary member 15 permanently fixed to the collecting container 7. During the first swinging, lifting movement the pin 10 is in the upper device 11.Not until after the pin 10 comes into contact with the abutment 14 does the second tipping movement of the container 1 take place, i.e. the abutment 14 moves the pin 10 from the first device 11 into the second device 12 to the position seen in
Figure 2. Since the abutment 14 and the pin 10 are in contact over a relatively long upward swinging path of the container 1, the abutment 14 has a rounded catching and abutment edge 16 to reduce friction during guiding of the pin 10.
As Figure 2 shows, because of the second tipping movement the container 1 can be tipped beyond the tipping angle obtained with the pivoting range of the pivot arms 5, so that emptying of the container 1 is improvide. The entry during this second tipping movement of the pin 10 and the abutment 14 into the lower device 12 safeguards the container 1 against falling from claws 4, particularly when the container 1 is shaken by rapid to and fro movements of the pivot arms 5 in the upper position.
As seen in Figure 1, the centre of gravity of the container 1 is vertically below the lugs 2, and a changed position of the centre of gravity, caused by uneven distribution of the contents. can be compensated for by the pair of catch-hooks 13, so that even with a different centre of gravity it is possible to empty the container 1. However, with the pair of catch-hooks 13 it is also possible to empty out effectively a container 1 with a centre of gravity below the zone between the lugs 2 and the pins 10. When the pivot arms 5 are swung upwards, containers with this construction form (not shown) are not initially swung but the pins 10 rest on the catch-hooks 13 immediately after lifting from the ground.
The apparatus also has a device for opening a cover 20 which is pivotally mounted on the container 1. The pivot axis 21a of an opening lever (Fig. 2) is displaced from the axis of suspension of the container 1 relative to the pivot arms 5, and an actuating device 22 for the opening lever 21 is arranged on at least one pivot arm 5. The cylinder-piston assembly 9 is linked at the end of its piston rod 9a by a pin 23 to a bracket 24 on each pivot arm 5. Mounted pivotally on these pins 23 is an actuating lever 25 for the opening lever-actuating device 22, designed as a linkage arrangement.
The actuating levers 25 bears a follower boss 25a which projects above the end of the piston rod 9a.
As the upwards pivoting or arcuate unison rocking of the pivot arms 5, and the relative displacement which occurs thereby between the pivot arms 5 and the cylinderpiston assembly 9, is carried out, then at a pre-determined pivoting position the boss 25a engages the end of the piston rod 9a and is moved relatively forwards by the piston rod 9a. This presses the actuating lever 25 in the direction of the arrow 26.
The opening lever 21, which is linked at 27 to the actuating device 22, is simultaneously swung upwards with an integral follower 28, whereupon the latter engages under a projection or handle 29 on the cover 20, which is thus opened, and as shown in
Figure 2 the cover 20 is opened sufficiently far for the container 1 to be completely open in this arem As Figure 1 shows, the container 1 of this construction has two hinged covers 20, 201 pivotally mounted near the carrying elements 2. So that the cover 201 cannot hinge open when the container 1 is tipped, a spring device 30 for holding the cover 201 shut is provided. This device 30 has a closing lever 31 is also connected at 27 to the pivot point of the opening lever 21 by way of an extensible tension spring 32.As shown in Figure 2, the lower end of the closing lever 31 is drawn upwards by the spring 32 so that the upper end 311 of the closing lever engages the cover 201 and thus prevents it opening.
The upper end of the closing lever 311 can have an elastic support element, which engages the cover 201. To ensure reliable closure of the cover 201, the length of the lower part of the closing lever 31 is such that the upper part 311 of the closing lever 31 already engages the cover 201 when the
pivot arms 5 move into the upper part of
their pivoting movement. The further up
wards pivoting movement which follows,
and the tipping movement of the container
1 relative to the pivot arms 5, are accom
modated by the spring 32. In this way, in
the upper pivoting phase of the pivot arms
5, and during the tipping movement of the
container 1 relative to the pivot arms 5, the
cover 201 is held securely closed.
In the modification according to Figure
3 the abutment 14 is a circular disc or roller
14b which is mounted at 15b freely rotat
ably on the collecting container 7. The pin
10 comes into contact in the upper pivoting
or swinging phase of the pivot arms 5 with
the circumference of this disc 14b. As the
upwards pivoting movement is continued,
the disc 14b bearing the pin 10 rotates in
the direction of the arrow 16b. During the
relative tipping movement between the con
tainer 1 and the pivot arms 5 the disc 14b
then rotates counter to the arrow 16b. In
this way little friction arises between the
circumference of the disc 14b and the pin
10. Due to the circular design, operation is
indepedent of any starting point on the
disc 14b.
Modifications are possible. Thus, the stop
member can be in the form of a cross-bar, and the receiving and retaining devices can
be fitted to the container in the form of a
plate, in which case the said devices and the
space between them will be in the form of
slots in this plate. In another embodiment
the pick-up device may comprise at least one
plate fitted to a pivot arm or to one side of
the container, and the receiving and retaining
devices formed by added strips.
In the embodiment shown the catch-hook
13 automatically leaves the inlet zone of the
lower device 12 when the pivot arms 5 are
swung up, due to its shape and the position
of its centre of gravity. However, it is also
possible to provide for more positive opera
tion of the catch-hook 13 by stops or other
members, for opening the inlet to the lower
device 12.
