[Classes 78(iii) and 78(iv)] Means for loading and packing refuse into a refuse collecting vehicle comprise a substantially closed chamber 2 at the rear of the vehicle, in which is a . container 4 for receiving the contents of. dustbins, the container being rotatable on trunnions 5 carried by a cradle 6 guided on inclined tracks 7 so that it may be raised and tipped to discharge its contents into the main body 1 of the vehicle. The refuse is compacted by a rake 8 on arms 9 hinged at 10 to brackets 11 secured to a trolley 12 running on rails 13 and operated by the piston rods 25 of a pair of hydraulic rams 24, the rake being guided by rollers 14 cooperating with fixed guides 15, 16, 21 and a pivoted spring-biassed guide 17 so that it shifts refuse on its forward but not on its rearward stroke. Alternatively the rake 8 and guides 15, 16, 17, 21 may be replaced by a flap hinged to be inoperative in the rearward direction of travel. The trolley 12 is connected to the cradle 6 by wire ropes or roller chains 22 passing over pulleys or sprockets 23 so that the trolley makes a complete forward and rearward stroke for each raising and lowering of the cradle. The connection between the cradle and the trolley may be modified to provide a velocity ratio other than unity. Two toothed pinions 26 fast on a shaft 27 journalled on the trolley engage with toothed racks 28 on the lower side of the rails 13 to prevent the trolley turning askew. The tilting of the container 4 at the top of its travel is effected by the engagement of cam surfaces 29 on the container engaging rollers 30. The rear chamber 2 is hinged at 3 to the rear of the vehicle body so that it swings clear when the latter is tilted to discharge the refuse.
