Abstract
803,995. Rear viewing mirrors for vehicles. DESMO, Ltd. Jan. 15, 1955 [Sept. 7, 1954], No. 25867/54. Class 103(2) A rear-viewing mirror 2 for a vehicle is mounted on an arm or bracket 1 which is swivelly connected to an attachment part 3 secured to the front wing 4 or other part of the vehicle in such a manner that the mirror will turn under impact and then be restored to its initial position. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 6, the arm 1 has a circular-sectioned boss 13 which is provided with a pivot pin 14 rotatably mounted in a bore 14 formed on the attachment part 3. The boss 13 has two oblique surfaces 20a, 20b which engage resiliently corresponding surfaces 21a, 21b on the attachment part 3, the resilience being provided by a spring 18 located in a recessed portion of the part 3. When the mirror or arm 1 is struck the boss 13 rides up the inclined surfaces of the part 3 but may be prevented from over-riding by the spring being fully compressed and serving as a stop against further axial movement of the boss 13. In a modification the outer end of the pin 14 has a washer which bears against the end of the part 3 to prevent over-riding. In the construction shown in Fig. 9, the boss 13<SP>1</SP> has only one inclined surface 29 and the part 3 is correspondingly shaped at 28.
