Abstract

1,132,769. Aircraft head - up displays. ELLIOT BROS. (LONDON) Ltd. 1 Sept., 1967 [3 Sept., 1966], No. 39495/66. Heading B7W. A head-up display comprising a partial reflector 1 is mounted on apparatus that is arranged to displace the reflector to a retracted position 1a whenever a predetermined force, e.g. by the impact of the head of an observer 34, acts on the reflector. The reflector 1 is carried by pivoted arms 4, 7 on a fixed bracket 10 and is retained in the operative position by a latch assembly 14 comprising an arm 15 spring- loaded by spring 21 to engage a recess 18 in arm 15 with a pin 20 on arm 7, thereby holding the apparatus in the operative position against the action of a torsion spring 12 which tends to retract it to the position la. A bell-crank arm 22 which carries a padded bar 28 is pivotally mounted at 11 on bracket 10 and urged against a stop 26 by a spring 23. Upon impact arm 22 is moved to act on arm 15 to release the linkage and allow it to be moved by spring 12 to the retracted position, such movement being damped by a dashpot 29 acting through a link 31.
