Abstract
640,668. Jettison able cockpit hoods. BLACKBURN AIRCRAFT, Ltd., HAND, P. G. E., and BULMER, N. Nov. 12, 1947, No. 30134. [Class 4] A jettisonable sliding cockpit hood of the kind in which the rails on which the hood slides swing up about a rearwardly disposed axis to effect disconnection, is provided with a spring-loaded plunger carried by a rail 4 capable of engaging an aperture or recess in the hood, the plunger being normally held retracted to permit free sliding movement of the hood on the rails but being released to engage the hood to lock it against sliding when the rails commence to swing upwardly, the latter normally being held against lateral displacement or distortion. The device is shown applied to a hood which pivots about releasable connections 5 at the rearward ends of the rails, and in which jettisoning is initiated by spring-loaded plungers 6, the rail 2 carrying amounting 8 disposed near its mid-point and which forms a housing for the plunger 7. The rail 2 engages a bracket 14 secured to the fuselage structure, lateral distortion of the rail being thus prevented. The plunger 7 is normally held retracted by a lever 11 which is engaged by a rod 15 extending between the vertical side walls of the bracket 14, but upon the initial swinging movement of the rail 2 the lever 11 is disengaged from the rod 15 and the end of the plunger 7 enters an aperture 9 in the side frame member 10 of the hood 1, thereby preventing sliding movement of the latter. Specification 623,315 also is referred to.
