Abstract

[Also in Group XXVIII] In a pressure-exchanger, impulse type blading providing inter-blade passages of constant cross-section is provided in the path of the gas between the ducting and the cells to provide power at the shaft with which the blading is rotatable; the blading may rotate the cells or ducting, whichever is rotatable, or may be separately rotatable. A closed heat input stage 19, 20, 21, Fig. 5, or internal combustion in the cells of fuel from a spray nozzle 10, Fig. 1, may be employed. In the case of a rotating cell ring the cell walls are shaped to form the blading; additional blades 17, Fig. 3, between the cell walls may be provided at the ends of the cells; alternatively helical cell walls may be meployed. The cell walls may be provided with an internal cavity 16 through which cooling fluid is circulated. The machine may be controlled by varying the fuel supply by means of a constant speed governor. Contra-rotating cell rings may be employed and the cell outlets may be at an angle other than a right-angle to the axis of rotation.
