Abstract
A granular sodium silicate which can be blended with other materials, e.g. for detergent compositions and consisting of an intimate bonded mixture of anhydrous and a hydrated sodium metasilicate may be prepared by adding 0.2-0.4 parts by weight of water to 1 part by weight of anhydrous sodium metasilicate, said mixture containing not more than 3% of sodium hydroxide, and blending. It is preferred to add the water rapidly whilst blending the anhydrous silicate until a translucent appearance is obtained and then continuing the blending for at least 1/4 hour until the mixture is uniform. If the anhydrous silicate has been crystallized from an alkaline solution, it is necessary to wash the material first, preferably with aqueous sodium metasilicate. The resulting granules have a melting point of 63-70 DEG C. and contain sodium metasilicate hexahydrate and possibly pentahydrate. By heating at as low as 150 DEG C., preferably under vacuum, a substantially anhydrous granular material can be obtained.
