Abstract
820,092. Extruding. SOUTHERN UNITED TELEPHONE CABLES Ltd. May 18, 1956 [May 18, 1955], No. 14395/55. Class 83 (4). The ram 5 of a metal extrusion press has its working face 8 surrounded by a metal ring 7 or sleeve maintained under circumferential tension. The ring 7 is preferably shrunk on to the working end of the ram, which may be provided with a spigot, Fig. 1 (not shown). A metal sleeve 9 of greater radial thickness than the ring is compressed against a cross-head 10 for the ram. The ring and sleeve prevent tensile stresses being set up in the ram and causing its premature failure. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the ram has a frusto-conical head 14 which receives a corresponding seating on the end of a sleeve 15 which is compressed between said head and a cross-head 16 whereby the lower end of the sleeve is placed under circumferential tension. An outer sleeve 18 may be secured to the end of the ram by welding. The ram is of particular use in an extrusion press of the kind described in Specification 394,427 wherein the press container is fed with molten metal from a feeding vessel mounted above the container. In this case the outer sleeve 18 always extends above the level of the moten metal in the sealing vessel.
