Class 75(4) In an electric light fitting for street and similar lighting of the kind consisting of a canopy supported from a lamp standard and a refractory bowl supported by the canopy and forming therewith a dust and rain-tight enclosure, the support means for the lamp or lamps holds it with its axis inclined to the rim of the bowl at an angle less than 45 degrees, the internal diameter of the rim of the bowl is less than the overall length of the longest lamp which can be held in the fitting including its lamp holder or lamp holders and at least one-third of the axial length of the longest lamp is within the bowl. In the form shown, the canopy 1 is dome shaped, having a tubular extension 4 for mounting it on a supporting arm and a cup flange 11 against which the rim 5 of the bowl is seated with the interposition of a gasket 12. The bowl is held in place by a hinge 8 at cne end and a clip 10 at the other and has a pattern of parallel rows of prisms 13. The lamp 16 is carried by a lamp holder 14 adjacent the extension 4 and a suspension loop 19 depending from a reflector 17. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the plane of the rim of the bowl is parallel to she axis of the extension 4, the lamp holder being mounted in an extension of the canopy at the opposite end to the extension 4. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) the canopy consists of a truncated elliptical cone closed at the top by an elliptical dome having an extension to receive the supporting arm, below which the lamp holder is mounted. The rim of the bowl is inclined to the horizontal and a reflector in the form of a double V is mounted above the lamp. The apparatus is suitable for use with H.P.M.V. lamps, sodium lamps and fluorescent lamps.
