Class 44 In a slam lock or latch a pivoted latch bar 4 is connected to a pivoted releasing handle 9 by a pull rod 11 which on releasing movement of the handle will move the latch bar out of its latching position yet will permit movement of the latch bar out of the latching position without movement of the handle, an abutment 19 being provided on the rod between the adjacent ends of a pair of helical compression springs 20, 21 one of which acts between the abutment and a fixed point on a frame 1 of the lock or latch to retain the handle in its normal relation to the frame and the other of which acts between the abutment and the latch bar to retain the latch bar in its latching position, the spring 20 for retaining the handle being stronger than the spring 21. The latch bar 4 has a hook end 5 and it is pivotally connected between flanges 2 forming part of the frame 1; the handle 9 is pivoted to a mounting part 8 which is integrally formed with a plate part 7 of the frame. The rod 11 is pivotally connected to the handle and its other end is screw threaded and passes through a clearance hole in the latch bar, a stop nut 16 having a partspherical surface being threaded on the rod to engage the latch bar.
