Abstract

Classes 7(2) and 7(6) A dual-fuel compression ignition engine comprises a first camshaft 1, Fig. 1, operating the inlet and exhaust valves and the main fuel injection pumps 5 for operation on liquid fuel, a second camshaft 9 for operating subsidiary inlet valves 13, Fig. 2, and pilot fuel injection pumps 12 for operation on gas with pilot fuel injection, and changeover means by which the manifold 14 leading to the valves 13 is alternatively supplied with compressed air for starting or with gaseous fuel and the fuel is supplied either from the main pumps 5 or the pilot pumps 12. At starting the manifold 14 is supplied with compressed air, a valve 21 being opened, and the control means are set for operation on fuel-injection from the pumps 5 controlled by the engine governor. On changeover to gaseous fuel a control valve 20 is opened to supply gaseous fuel to the manifold 14, the control racks of the pumps 5 are set to cut-off, the pilot pumps 12 are brought into operation and butterfly control valves 18, 19, in the air intake and gas manifolds 17, 14, are connected to the engine governor. The changeover may be effected by servomotors from a control unit 23. The camshaft 9 is driven through an intermediate shaft 8 from the camshaft 1.
