Abstract
819,653. Paper for abrasive coatings. CARBORUNDUM CO. Feb. 14, 1956 [Feb. 21, 1955], No. 4548/56. Class 96. [Also in Group XXIII] A waterproof sandpaper comprises a paper backing comprising essentially paper fibres banded in sheet form at least in part by a synthetic elastomer and being present in the proportion of 30 to 100 parts of the elastomer to each 100 parts of fibres to impart elasticity to said paper so that the paper has a dry stretch at the breaking point in the machine direction of not less than 4 per cent. A presize film of a synthetic elastomer is coated on to the coat-side surface of the backing and a coating of abrasive grains attached thereto by a waterproof bond which may take the form of varnish making and sand sizing coatings. A backsize film comprising essentially a synthetic elastomer and which may also contain methyl cellulose and a finely divided granular material to provide non-slip characteristics, e.g. diatomaceous earth, tripoli, pumice or colloidal silica, is coated on to the back-side surface of said backing. The synthetic elastomer of the backing and films are copolymers of butadiene with styrene or acrylonitrile, or mixtures thereof with polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polystyrene, and copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride.
