A coated abrasive sheet having a double coating of abrasive grain is produced by embedding a first coating of abrasive grain from hopper 12 in the adhesive of an adhesive coated web backing 11 and redistributing the grain therein by the application of slipping pressure before the adhesive is set, and depositing the second coating of grain from hopper 17 with the long axis of the grain tending to be substantially perpendicular to the plane of the backing sheet. The slipping pressure may be applied by means of roller 15 in slipping contact with the abrasive coating and the second coating may be orientated by electrostatic influence as shown by electrodes 18, 19, or by mechanical means. The first coating of abrasive grain is insufficient to completely cover the adhesive coated backing. A size coating of adhesive may be applied subsequent to the application of the second coating of abrasive grains. Specification 433,128 is referred to.
