Abstract
819,593. Hydrants. CLIFFE, J. Jan. 27, 1958 [Oct. 25, 1956 (2)], Nos. 32516/56 and 32517/56. Class 69 (1). A fire hydrant having a main screw-down valve C is provided with an auxiliary valve D which has a screw valve member arranged to operate in line with the outlet passage C<SP>1</SP> from the main valve chamber and which is adapted. for adjustment to control the flow through its valve seat A<SP>2</SP> from complete closing to complete opening, there being an-automatic relief valve G on the delivery side of the automatic valve D. The auxiliary valve D consists of a screwed plug having a chamfered inner end D<SP>1</SP> working in a seating A<SP>2</SP>. Coaxial with and surrounding the inner end of the plug. is an auxiliary chamber from which lead passages to the main outlet A<SP>1</SP> and to the relief valve G. The valve D is adjusted in any desired position by a lock nut D<SP>2</SP>. Predetermined pressure at outlet A<SP>1</SP> to which a water hose is fixed is obtained by rotating valve D in an opening direction until a back. pressure is created in chamber C<SP>2</SP> sufficient to lift ball G against the force of a spring H and so eject water at outlets K. The valve D is then turned back in a clockwise direction until . water ceases to flow from K. The valve D is then set for operation at the predetermined maximum delivery pressure. One or more straight passages N are provided through the wall of the hydrant body A in the inlet side of the main valve C and adapted for connection of a hose to draw off water at the high supply pressure. This water at the high supply pressure may be used for dust suppression purposes in mines or the like.
