Abstract
Boric acid tri-amides of the general formula <FORM:0819455/IV (b)/1> in which R1 represents hydrogen or an alkyl group and R2 represents alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl, or in which the NR1R2 group represents a heterocyclic system, are prepared by reacting boron trihalides at ordinary temperature, and in the absence of free alkali metal, with metal compounds of primary or secondary amines or heterocyclic compounds containing an NH group. Boron trifluoride is a particularly suitable boron halide, and is preferably used in the form of the boron trifluoride-ether addition compound. Alkali metal or alkaline earth metal compounds of the amines are suitable and it is particularly advantageous to use the reaction products of primary or secondary amines with Grignard compounds, which products have the general formula <FORM:0819455/IV (b)/2> in which R1 and R2 have the meanings defined above. Inert solvents, such as benzene may be used in the process. In examples: (1) boron trifluoride-dimethyl etherate is added to dimethyl amine in benzene, the mixture is reacted with ethyl magnesium bromide and boric acid tri-dimethyl amide is separated by fractional distillation; (2) aniline in benzene is reacted with an ethereal solution of ethylmagnesium bromide, boron trifluoride-dimethyl etherate is added dropwise, and boric acid trianilide is precipitated; (3) potassium is reacted with methyl aniline to form potassium methyl aniline which is dissolved in tetrahydrofuran and boron trifluoride-dimethyl etherate is added to the solution which is heated and then cooled to crystallize boric acid tri-methylanilide; (4) methyl aniline in benzene is reacted with an ethereal solution of ethyl magnesium bromide, boron tribromide in benzene is added dropwise and boric acid tri-methylanilide crystallizes out; (5) carbazole in tetrahydrofuran is reacted with an ethereal solution of ethyl magnesium bromide, boron trifluoride dimethyl etherate is added dropwise and the boron tri-carbazole compound is precipitated. The products are useful as stabilizers for plastics and as fuel additives.
