Abstract

Heterocyclic tertiary amines of formula <FORM:0860404/IV (b)/1> in which R and R1 are hydrogen, alkyl, alicyclic or aromatic groups; R11 is an alkyl, aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic group and n is an integer equal to or greater than 2, are obtained by reacting a lactam of formula <FORM:0860404/IV (b)/2> with an ester of formula R11COOR111 (R111 is alkyl or aralkyl) in the presence of lithium aluminium hydride. Alternatively a heterocyclic tertiary amine may be formed by reacting a compound containing both an ester group and a lactum group with lithium aluminium hydride. Examples are given of the preparation of N-ethylpiperidine, N-benzylpiperidine and delta-coniceine. Alcohols are formed as by-products.
