Abstract

Cyclic tertiary amines having the general formula: <FORM:0849037/IV(b)/1> wherein n is an integer of 2 or more, R and R1 represent hydrogen or alkyl, alicyclic or aromatic groups and R11 represents an alkyl, alicyclic or aromatic group are prepared by reacting the corresponding cyclic secondary amines with carboxylic acid esters of the general formula R11 COOR111, R111 representing an alkyl, alicyclic, araliphatic or aromatic group, in the presence of lithium aluminium hydride. Examples describe the interaction of Li Al H4 in ethyl ether at room temperature with (1) pyrrolidine and ethyl acetate yielding N-ethyl pyrrolidine and (2) piperidine and ethyl acetate or benzyl benzoate yielding N-ethyl and N-benzyl piperidine respectively.
