Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0841626/IV(b)/1> wherein R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical of at most 3 carbon atoms and X is hydrogen, an alkanoyl radical of at most 3 carbon atoms or the radical <FORM:0841626/IV(b)/2> in which W is a saturated nitrogen containing heterocyclic radical attached to the carbonyl carbon atom through a nitrogen atom or the radical -NR2R3 in which R2 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical of at most 3 carbon atoms or an amino group and R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical of at most 3 carbon atoms, at least one X being the radical <FORM:0841626/IV(b)/3> They may be prepared by condensing a 2-phenyl-ethyl-1 : 2-glycol with an alkyl haloformate to form the corresponding cyclic carbonate and then reacting this with ammonia or an amino compound to form the corresponding carbamate, which may then be acylated by means of an acyl halide to form the corresponding alkanoyloxy derivative or which may be reacted with a second mol. of ammonia or an amino compound to give the appropriate dicarbamate. Examples describe the preparation of 2-hydroxy-2-phenylethyl carbamate and 2-hydroxy-1-phenylethyl carbamate and the acetate of the former, the 2-hydroxy - 2 - phenylethyl ester of morpholine-N - carboxylate, 2 - hydroxy - 2 - phenylethyl-N - methyl and - N : N - dimethyl carbamates, 2 - hydroxy - 2 - phenylethyl - N - amino carbamate, 1 - phenylethyl - 1 : 2 - dicarbamate and 2 - hydroxy - 2 - phenylpropyl carbamate. A list of further products is also given.
