Abstract

Secondary aminocarbinols of the general formula: <FORM:0787668/IV (b)/1> are prepared from b -aminoketones of general formula C6H5CO.CH2.CH2.NHR in the form of their hydrohalide salts, by reaction with a cyclohexyl organo metallic reagent, e.g. cyclohexyl magnesium halide or cyclohexyllithium (where R is an alkyl group with 1-3 carbon atoms). In an example 1-cyclohexyl-1-phenyl-3-methylaminopropan-1-ol is prepared by refluxing a mixture of b -methylaminopropiophenone hydrochloride with a solution in ether of a Grignard reagent obtained by reacting cyclohexyl chloride with magnesium and iodine. The resulting mixture is cooled in ice and acetic acid and then warmed to not more than 50 DEG C. in order to distil off the ether. Excess ammonia solution is then added and the solid which separates out filtered and precipitated with an equal volume of acetone and water. 1-cyclohexyl-3-ethylamino - 1 - phenylpropan - 1 - ol is prepared by a similar method using 2-ethylaminopropiophenone hydrochloride and cyclohexyl magnesium chloride.
