Abstract

1,272,134. Aryloxazoles. CIBA-GEIGY A.G. 2 Oct., 1969 [7 Oct., 1968], No. 48596/69. Addition to 1,218,198. Heading C2C. Aryloxazoles are prepared by reacting in an inert solvent (a) an o-hydroxy-aminoaryl compound with (b) an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid containing at least 4 carbon atoms or a mono- or di-carboxylic acid containing 1 or 2 five- or six-membered carbocyclic or heterocyclic rings in the presence of (c) a small amount of boric acid, and (d) less than a stoichiometric amount of a nitrogen base which is a secondary or tertiary, cyclic, non-aromatic nitrogen base; a primary or secondary aminobenzene; a primary or secondary, aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amine; or a basic nitrogen compound containing at least one group of formula by first heating the reaction mixture to a temperature of 150-200‹ C., and then gradually increasing the temperature to at least 200‹ C. Lists of starting materials are given and detailed examples describe the preparation of (a) 2,5-di- [benzoxazolyl - (2<SP>1</SP>)] thiophene; (b) 2,5 - di- [5<SP>1</SP> - tert. - butylbenzoxazolyl - (2<SP>1</SP>)] - thiophene; (c) 2 - (41 - methylphenyl) - 5 - tert. - butylbenzoxazole; (d) 4-benzoxazolyl-(2)-diphenyl- (1,11); (e) 2,5-di-[benzoxazolyl-(2<SP>1</SP>)]-furane; (f) 1,2 - di - [benzoxazolyl - (2<SP>1</SP>)]- ethane; (g) 1,4- di - [benzoxazolyl-(21)]-benzene; (h) 1,4-di- [benzoxazolyl-(21)]-naphthalene; and (j) the compound of formula
