819,416. Making pipes. ETABLISSEMENT POUR MATERIAUX DE CONSTRUCTION, and SMIDTH & CO. A. S., F. L. Dec. 6, 1957, No. 38052/57. Class 99(2). In the manufacture of fibro-cement pipes wherein a thin layer of acqueous slurry of cement and fibrous substances are wound and compressed on a metal mandrel 1, the compression is exerted by two sets of rubber-coated coaxial rollers 8, 9 each acting substantially throughout the length of a portion of the periphery of the pipe being made or on the slurry layer being wound on the mandrel, the gaps 12 between the rollers of one set of rollers being disposed opposite the gaps between the rollers of the other set. As shown, the mandrel 1 is supported and rotated by a driven roller 2 over which passes an endless belt carrying a layer 5 of a slurry of cement and asbestos. A cross-beam 7 mounted on the frame 6 of the machine is movable vertically by hydraulic jacks 10 so that the pressure rollers 8, 9 carried by the cross-beam exert a compression on the slurry layer wound on to the mandrel. The rollers are rotatably mounted in bearings 11 secured to the cross-beam and located in the gaps 12.
