Slurry is fed at 11 to the nip between a driven non-screening roller 1, Fig. 2, and an idler screening roller 6, having a screen 12, Fig. 7, disposed over drainage channels 13. The shaft 7 of the roller 6 is arranged in a bracket 8 pivoted at 9 and having two lever arms 8a depressed by springs 10 to urge the rollers together. The driven roller 1 has end flanges 31 to ensure retention on its surface of the solid residue which is subsequently removed by a scraper 32. In Fig. 3, the screen 12 consists of parallel tapersection bars 16 curved in planes normal to the roller axis and supported on the portions 14 of the cylindrical surface between the longitudinal drainage channels 13, from which liquid escapes by bores 15. The periphery of the roller is covered by sets of the bars 16 extending between connecting pieces secured at intervals around the roller surface, and is divided axially into two parts, by blocks 23 in the drainage channels 13. The bars 16 are held in place by retaining bars 17, one above each portion 14. In Fig. 6 the bars 16 are parallel with the roller axis, and are held onto supporting bars 24 (grooved into portions 14), by retaining bars 17. The portions 14 are chamfered so as to avoid blinding of the screen at these places. To prevent liquid draining back again through the screen into the solid residue the channels 13 may be inclined forwardly at the bottom, Fig. 7. Vacuum may be applied to the channels in the pressure zone. The driven roller 1 may have a grooved surface. One roller may be mounted within, and cooperate with the inner surface of, the other.
