Abstract

819,338. Convertible floor polishers. ELECTROLUX CORPORATION. Jan. 3, 1958 [Jan. 31, 1957], No. 291/58. Class 138(1). A floor polishing device is convertible to a power tool, especially a hand power tool, by removal of a heavy ring member 12 with its ring- shaped stationary polishing means 102 and a rotary polisher 84, and replacement of the latter by a tool. As shown a housing comprises body and cover portions 14, 16 secured together by bolts and separated by a rubber &c. band 20 serving as gasket and bumper. The drive is by a domestic vacuum cleaner applied to conduit 60, the suction drawing in air at 36 to rotate turbine 32 in chamber 35, gear 50 in gear chamber 40, shaft 52, and yieldable drive (as described in Specification 672,760 [Group XXXIII]) to disc 76 held in place by latches 78, Fig. 6, (not shown), engageable in slots 80, and serpentine polishing means (such as bristles) 84. A plate 38 and flinger 46 prevent dust entering gear chamber 40; cap 56 protects the bearing 30. To convert into a hand tool, latches 78 are squeezed inwardly and withdrawn from slots 80 so removing the polishing disc 76 ; latches 90 secured to the ring 12, Figs. 2, 7, now accessible, are pivoted out of engagement with the slightly inclined slots 92 in the depending skirt 94, and the ring 12 removed. The threaded shank 106 of a chuck 108 may be screwed into the tapped bore 62 of the shaft 52, Fig. 10, and any desired tool be secured therein.
