819,292. Self-contained generating systems; systems depending on two or more sources. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. April 29, 1957 [Oct. 15, 1956], No. 13629/57. Class 38 (4). In a supply system for, say, a refrigerator van, an A.C. machine is employed as a generator, driven in tandem with a compressor from a heat engine, to supply other electrical loads, or from a suitable supply as a motor driving the compressor with the engine disconnected. A diesel engine 2 drives a preferably synchronous machine 7 as a generator also a compressor 8 through a clutch 5, the output from machine 7 being fed to motors 19, 20. When machine 7 acts as a motor, with motors 19, 20 connected in parallel supplied over a plug 38, the engine 2 is disconnected by clutch 5, the operating lever 6 being coupled to the machine isolator switch 41, a changeover switch 42, and a shorting switch 53. An additional winding 24 on machine 7 enables it to start as an induction motor under the control of a time delay 52.
