573,074. Turning - gear. WEST, H. E. W. Oct. 28, 1943, No. 17843. [Class 7 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] An electric power installation for a multiengined aircraft comprises an A.C. dynamoelectric machine 18 ... 21 coupled to each main power unit 14 ... 17 and supplying a separate circuit 52 ... 55 for aircraft services. An auxiliary engine 11 and generator 12 is adapted to supply power to these dynamoelectric machines for starting the main power units and this engine may also supply aircraft services. The dynamo-electric machines are coupled to the main-power units through twospeed gearing incorporating over - running clutches ; for example, at starting, the dynamoelectric machine drives through a 100 : 1 reduction gear and when the power unit has started it drives, through a clutch which is over-run during starting, the dynamo-electric machine at a speed which is the same as or greater than its own speed, over-running the clutch in the starting drive. Epicyclic gearing is preferably used. As shown, the machines 18 ... 21 are coupled to exciters 22 ... 25, the field windings of which may be self-excited or supplied from an exciter 13 coupled to the auxiliary engine. Switching means are provided to permit each main power unit to be connected independently to the auxiliary generator for starting.
