Abstract
871,188. Paralleling A.C. machines. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. Dec. 10, 1958 [Jan. 15, 1958], No. 1413/58. Class 38 (4). A method of allowing an alternator uncoupled from its prime mover to operate as a synchronous condenser for a supply system employs an auxiliary generator which is connected to the alternator to bring it into synchronism with the supply system. The alternator 1 is uncoupled from its turbine a through a coupling 6 and is connected through switches 7, 8 and auxiliary bus-bars 3a to a generator 9 driven by a motor 10. The turbo alternator turning gear then rotates the alternator to which the excitation is applied, and excitation is also applied to the generator either at the same time or when the alternator is rotating, hence causing the generator also to rotate. The motor 1 is then energized to bring the machines 1, 9 to the supply synchronous speed, when the alternator 1 can be paralleled to main busbars 3 and the generator disconnected. The motor 10 may be of the asynchronous type with gearing, or the generator 10 may have two more poles than the alternator 1 to ensure that synchronous speed is reached.
