A refrigerating installation in a refrigerated motor vehicle comprises a compressor driven by an electric motor M and a three-phase generator G driven by the engine P of the vehicle, the generator G being connected to the motor M and being provided with two separate field windings E, Es connectable to the vehicle battery B by switches N, S respectively, the field winding E only being excited when the motor is running normally, but when the motor requires additional energy at starting the field winding Es is also excited to boost the output of the generator G. A switch Ls is supplied whereby the motor M can be connected either to the generator G or an alternative supply K. An overload device D is provided and the motor M has an associated stardelta switch O. A reversing switch I is provided to ensure the correct rotation of the motor M when connected to the alternative supply K.
