Abstract

750,270. Generating arrangements. BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH, Ltd. Jan. 14, 1955 [Feb. 8, 1954], No. 3693/54. Class 38 (4). The driving of a generator, upon failure of a main prime-mover, is taken over by a stand-by engine or motor which is automatically started up, the drive being maintained during the starting period of the stand-by machine by a hydraulic or other fluid-pressure motor automatically connected for supply from a fluidpressure accumulator when the main primemover failed, the accumulator normally being maintained charged by means energized by the generator. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, an alternator 10 is driven by a hydraulic motor 12 which is supplied either by pumps 14, 18- driven, respectively, by main and stand-by prime movers 13, 17-or by an accumulator 21, normally maintained charged by a motordriven pump 24, 25 supplied over a switch 29 from the alternator. Valves 16, 23 automatically shut and open, respectively, upon failure of the main machine 13, say as a result of the fall in speed, or frequency, of the alternator, valve 23 subsequently closing and valve 20 opening when the pressure developed by pump 18 of the stand-by machine reaches working value. The re-charging switch 29 and associated valve 27 may be controlled by the pressure obtaining in the accumulator. In a modified arrangement the hydraulic motor is in service only during the change-over period between main and stand-by drive.
