Abstract

An electricity supply network 4 normally energises a load 2 and is also connected to a synchronous dynamoelectric machine 1. On detection of failure of the network 4, a hydraulic engine 3 maintains rotation of the machine 1, now acting as a generator to supply load 2, and the hydraulic engine 3 also starts a diesel engine 5 which then drives the machine 1. Engine 3 is connected in a hydraulic circuit 14 including a pump 6 pressure accumulator 8, and a valve 11 controlled by an electronic system 9 responsive to a speed sensor 10. If the electronic system 9 fails the hydraulic system can control the speed of machine 1 but the maximum speed variation may then be higher.
