Abstract
819,092. Storing gases under pressure; stopping pipes. GOULD, J. P. March 21, 1957 [May, 29 1956], No. 9282/57. Classes 8(2) and 99(1). [Also in Group XVIII] A screw-threaded closure plug 11, Fig. 1 removable from a pipe or from the neck of a gas storage vessel 12 by engagement of the plug head 33 with the socket head 21 of an axially displaceable tool 14 in sealing engagement with one limb of a conventional discharge valve 13 comprises an outer sleeve 22, Fig. 2 screwed into the vessel neck, an inner hollow member 23 screwed into the sleeve 22 and having an open upper end forming the head 33 and a lower end mating with the lower end of sleeve 22 to effect closure of the vessel 12 and also having ports 36 which when member 23 is partly unscrewed from the sleeve 22 connects a space 41, Fig. 3 so formed with the interior of member 23 and so equalize pressure on opposite ends of the members 22 and 23 and so enables the latter to be more readily unscrewed from the vessel. The bottom of member 23 after the latter has been unscrewed sufficiently to provide the pressure equalizing space 41 engages radial grooves 47 in the base of sleeve 22 to effect unscrewing of the latter. The plug 11 when completely unscrewed from the vessel 12 is withdrawn clear of the valve bore by a pilot element 52 having shoulder-engaging spring detents 53.
