A process for the production of high tensile steel rods or wires for reinforcing concrete from steel rods or wires of lower tensile strength is characterized in that the tensile strength of the rods or wires is increased by cold working in two stages, in the first of which the rods, or wires are drawn to reduce their diameter and in the second of which the rods or wires are provided with projections or recesses on their surfaces to increase the bond between the rods or wires and the concrete. In an embodiment reinforcing steel rod or wire for making welded mesh reinforcements is first reduced by 15- 30 per cent of its original cross-section by drawing and then cold rolled to provide a further reduction of 5-15 per cent and to impart transverse rib-like projections to the rod or wire. The height of these projections is approximately 0.05 times the diameter of the finished rod and does not exceed 0.3 mm. and the width of each projection is approximately 1 mm.
