Abstract

818,854. Making reinforcing rods; altering physical structure; straightening. HUFNAGL, W. Aug. 26, 1957 [Aug. 27, 1956], No. 26857/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group X] A method of work-hardening a steel rod or wire to increase its tensile strength comprises continuously bending beyond its yield point and along its whole length a rod or wire made of steel capable of ageing, strengthening the rod or wire and then storing the rod or wire to allow ageing to take place. In an embodiment the steel rod or wire is drawn over a roller 2 by drawing rollers 3 which can be profiled to impart ridges or recesses to smooth-surfaced rods by cold forming. The radius of bending is less than six times the diameter of the rod or wire and preferably four times this diameter. In another embodiment the rod is passed between three rollers 4, 5 and 6 on to a winch drum 8 the middle roller 5 being movable relatively to the rollers 4 and 6 as shown in Fig. 2. One or more of the rollers can be profiled to provide projections or recesses on the rod. If the rod or wire is already profiled the bending roller is provided with a complementary profile as shown in Fig. 3. If the rod is provided with transverse and longitudinal ridges 14 and 15 respectively the height of the longitudinal ridges is such that they alone contact the bending roller (Fig. 4). The rod may be of circular cross-section with transverse ridges 18 projecting only on two opposite sides so that only the smooth parts of the surface engage the bending roller. The method can be combined with other cold-working operations, e.g. drawing, whereby part of the total increase of tensile strength is obtained by the drawing and the remainder by bending and strengthening.
