A process for increasing the strength of a steel bar for reinforced concrete as described in Specification 616,803 is characterized in that, in cold stretching, the steel is stretched beyond the yield region to such an extent that each bar undergoes uniform extension and in that the pitch of the twist, which may be effected, wholly or in part, at the same time as the stretching, lies between 5 and 100 times the diameter of the bar. Twisting may be included in the first part of the cold working and the last part may comprise twisting alone. The permanent extension may lie between 1 and 15 per cent.
