Abstract

818,430. Suction devices for handling articles. VAC-U-LIFT CO. June 25, 1957 [March 22, 1957], No. 19986/57. Class 78 (4). A reserve vacuum R is connected to a suction pad A only after the pad has engaged its load S so that suction is set up within the pad by a manually-controlled connection to a pump M. The connection to the reservoir R includes a valve H controlled through a solenoid from a pressure responsive device D. A further valve E, when in the position illustrated, connects both the pad A and the line G to the reservoir R to the suction of the pump M and connects the pressure side B<SP>1</SP> of the pump through a muffle B<SP>2</SP> to exhaust. In its other position the valve E isolates the connection G to the reservoir R, connects the muffle B<SP>2</SP> to the suction side of the pump, and connects the pressure side B<SP>1</SP> of the pump to the line B leading to the pad A so that the article engaged by the pad is blown off. The valve E is electrically controlled from push-buttons. A non-return valve V permits the article S to be held on the pad A by the vacuum in the reservoir R should the power to the pump M fail. A pressure responsive device F controls lamps indicating when the pad A has been brought into engagement with the article S. The skirt A<SP>2</SP> has a feathered contact edge as described in Specification 801,914.
