Abstract

818,289. Proofing cotton textiles. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 15, 1957 [Oct. 31, 1956], No. 32178/57. Class 140. The ability of cotton textiles to retain their water-repellency after laundering is improved by (1) treating them with a melamine product of formula preferably in aqueous solution; (2) converting the malamine product, as by heating to the substantially insoluble state; (3) applying to this treated cotton an alkyl hydrogen polysiloxane of formula where R is a lower alkyl radical such as methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, or butyl, a has a value of from 1.0 to 1.5, b has a value of from 0.75 to 1.25 and the sum of a and b has a value of from 2 to 2.25, inclusive, and from 0 to 200 per cent of an alkyl polysiloxane free from silicon hydrogen bonding of formula where R represents methyl, ethyl or mixed methyl-ethyl groups and n has a value from 1.5 to 1.98; and (4) heating to above 100‹ C. to cure the polysiloxane. The polysiloxanes and hydrogen polysiloxanes may be used in solution in organic solvents such as benzene, toluene, or xylene, or in aqueous dispersion using such dispersing agents as alkyl dimethyl- 3,4-dichlorobenzyl ammonium chlorides, stearamine acetate, alkali metal salts of sulphonated methyl oleate or polyethoxylated fatty acid amides. Cotton textiles which may be treated include those made from mercerized, acetylated, and cyanomethylated cotton. Specifications 632,954, 632,955, [both in Group IV (a)], 705,277 and U.S.A.
