Abstract

The activity of a chemically active pigment or extender (i.e one capable of reacting with the binder of a paint) is reduced by causing a suspension thereof to react with a solution of an inorganic silicate or a mono-alkyl silanolate of the formula R(OX)Si(OH)2 (where R is an alkyl radical and X is an alkali metal) to form on the pigment or extender a protective coating, the solution having a concentration such that at least 0,2% of the silicate or silanolate (calculated as SiO2) with reference to the weight of the pigment or extender is present in the liquid phase. The process may be carried out at temperatures up to the boiling point. The pigment may then be washed and dried, and subsequently treated with a fatty acid, oxalic acid or boric acid or a salt thereof, or a phosphate: or the acid or salt may be present in the silicate or silanolate solution. Zinc or aluminium sulphates or a metallic alcoholate may also be added. In examples, zinc oxide, white lead, a mixture of zinc oxide and white lead, toluidine red and Milori blue are treated with sodium silicate or with sodium methyl silanolate.
