Abstract

Metal oxides, and in particular those of thorium, titanium, uranium, zirconium and magnesium, are treated with an organo-silicon compound to coat the surfaces thereof, and the resulting coated particles are thereafter fired at 600-1200 DEG C. to decompose the organosilicon compounds are alkyl and aryl, aralkyl and alkaryl silicon halides, alkyl and aryl halosilanes and alkyl and aryl silicates. In addition to the organo-silicon compounds, inorganic silicon compounds which decompose on firing to form silica, may also be employed. According to an example, thorium oxide was exposed to the vapours of a 50% mol mixture of dimethyldichlorosilane and methyltrichloro-silane and then heated to 150 DEG C. to induce polymerization and remove hydrogen chloride. The product was washed with ammonium hydroxide and alcohol and finally with water, to remove the chloride ion and, after drying, the product was fired at 650 DEG C. Treatment according to the invention facilitates dispersion of the treated particles in slurries and results in extremely low settling rates.
