Abstract

The dyeing affinity, extensibility and handle of textile fibres of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and a vinylpyridine, with or without other monomers such as vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, are improved by treating the fibres with a dilute aqueous solution of an acid having a dissociation constant greater than 1 x 10-5, e.g. sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric, chloracetic or benzene sulphonic acid. The vinyl pyridine employed in the preparation of the copolymer may have nuclear-substituents, e.g., methyl and ethyl. Specification 670,268 is referred to.ALSO:The dyeing affinity of textile materials, e.g. fibres, yarns and fabrics, of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and a vinylpyridine, with or without other monomers such as vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, is improved by treating the textiles before dyeing with a dilute aqueous solution of an acid having a dissociation constant greater than 1 X 10-5, e.g. sulphuric, nitric, hydrochloric, chloracetic or benzene sulphonic acid. The pretreated textile may be rinsed free from acid or dried without rinsing and dyed with dispersed acetate, soluble acetate, direct, acid, chrome, basic and solubilized vat dyestuffs. The vinylpyridine employed in the copolymer preparation may have hydrocarbon substituents. Examples are given. Specification 670,268 is referred to.
