Abstract

818,058. Operating clutches. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. Sept. 26, 1955 [Sept.. 29, 1954], No. 27347/55. Class 80 (2). In an internal-combustion engine the clutch 12 is actuated by a servomotor piston 15 in a cylinder 16 through a linkage 14, 15. The cylinder 16 has a duct 17 connectible, under control of a valve 20, to a chamber 24 or to a pipe 27 leading to the engine suction line 25. A chamber containing a flexible diaphragm 22 has a space 21 connected to the suction line 25 by a pipe 26 and a space 23 open to the atmosphere at 36 or connected to the chamber 24 through a spring controlled valve 19. One side of the diaphragm 22 is under the action of an adjustable spring 40 and the other side has a projection 37 extending towards the valve 19. The compression of a spring 33 acting on the valve 19 is adjustable by a screw 34. With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2, the clutch is engaged. When the gear shift lever is moved to change gear a solenoid winding 30 is energived to move the valve 20 in the manner described in Specification 803,521. Such valve movement disconnects the duct 17 with the space 24 and connects the duct 17 with the pipe 27. Thus the servo piston 15 is drawn to the left, Fig. 1, to disconnect the clutch 12. When the gear shaft is completed the winding 30 is de-energized and the valve 20 returns to the position shown to interconnect the duct 17 and chamber 24. The pressure in the space 24, which is controlled by the valve 19, causes the clutch 12 to partially engage. As more and more fuel is fed to the engine the pressure in the induction pipe 25 and thus in the space 21 increases. This causes flexing of the diaphragm 22 and movement of the projection 37 to the right so that the latter engages the valve 19 and moves it from its seat. The resultant increase in pressure in the chamber 24 increases the clutch engaging pressure. Such clutchengaging pressure will gradually increase until such time as the maximum fuel supply is attained when the clutch will be fully engaged.
