Abstract
In the production of titanium dioxide by the vapour phase oxidation of volatile titanium halides, the gaseous suspension of titanium dioxide product is cooled by admixture with a cooler titanium dioxide of similar particle size and quality to that suspended in the hot suspension. The cool titanium dioxide may be employed in gaseous suspension, and is preferably cooled recycled product suspension. The cooling may take place in a zone immediately following the reaction zone. The temperature of the mixture after cooling is preferably below 400 DEG C., particularly below 300 DEG C. In an example, the titanium dioxide suspension, obtained by reacting titanium tetrachloride vapour with oxygen in the presence of a carbon monoxide flame, is led through a venturi-type tuyere, and the titania coolant is fed pneumatically through a separate inlet into the throat of the venturi.
