Abstract

816,481. Trimming and spreading materials. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD, and RATCLIFFE, F. Sept. 3, 1957 [June 8, 1956], No. 17788/56. Class 78 (4). Material in a bunker or in a blocked conduit or hopper is trimmed or agitated by blades 20 carried on a hub 13 rotated on a tubular member 10 by fluid entering the tool through the tube 10 and exhausted circumferentially at the periphery of the hub. The tube 10 may fit on a flexible hose or may screw into a tube of aluminium or light alloy so that the tool may be used as a lance. In the construction illustrated, the tube 10 terminates in a nose 11, on a reduced portion of which the hub 13 is held captive by a collar 14. The blades 20 are of sheet metal welded to the hub 13 and preferably welded together forwardly of the stationary nose 11. Compressed air or steam introduced through the tube 10 passes through tubes 18 screwed into the hub 13 to be exhausted through circumferentially directed nozzles 19. Eyes 23, 24 may receive nylon ropes or chains covered with rubber collars to enhance the agitating action. The fit of the hub 13 on the nose 11 is preferably such as to permit some air to escape at the boundaries to prevent ingress of dirt. In an alternative construction the blades 20 and reaction tubes 18 are moulded integrally with the hub 13 of rubber or a similar material bonded round a metal bush fitting on the nose 11.
