Abstract

825,425. Spades. ODELBERG & OLSON A. B. Sept. 14, 1956, No. 28150 /56. Class 6(2). [Also in Group XXIII] A spade comprises a bowl-shaped blade 10 having its marginal portions 26 flanged outwardly away from the centre of the blade, pivotally attached to a shaft 12, means being provided whereby the blade can be locked in one position in which it is substantially aligned with the shaft, and in a second position in which it is angularly disposed relatively to the shaft. When the blade is in this latter position, the spade can be used as a pick. The blade is attached to the handle by means of a shoe 14 rigidly secured at one end to the blade and having its other end forked for engagement with the end 16 of the shaft, a bolt 18 pivotally connecting the two members together. The forked ends of the shoe 14 are provided with two abutment faces 20 and 22 which can be selectively engaged by a sleeve 24 in threaded engagement with the shaft 12, so that by moving the sleeve towards the handle I5, pivoting the blade 10 and returning the sleeve 24 to bear against either of the faces 20 or 22, the blade can be locked in either of the two positions described above.
