Abstract
815,892. Stud and socket fastenings. REYNOLDS, J. Aug. 22, 1955 [Aug. 20, 1954], No. 24357/54. Class 44 A fastening device for connecting apertured members 4, 5 comprises spaced oppositely directed resilient head portions 1 and means 2 connecting said head portions, a part of which immediately behind each head portion is of lesser diametrical dimension than the largest diametrical dimension of said head portions and the central part of which is constitued by an enlargement or flange 3 which is of greater diametrical dimension than the longest diametrical dimension of the head portions and which is adapted to lie between the members and to serve as a spacer or cushion, each said head portion being such that it can be passed through the aperture in a member 4, 5 by relative displacement of said member and said device, and being of such shape and size relatively to the size of the aperture that in passing through said aperture it first contracts and then resumes its original size and shape so that the edge of the aperture is located behind said head portion. The lower edges of the head portions can be chamfered if desired for ease of assembly. The head portions can be expanded or distorted after assembly with the members 4, 5 either by providing the device with an axial bore to receive a nut and bolt or by providing either or both head portions with a tapering depression to receive a tapering plug. The head portions can also be secured by a horse-shoe shaped member inserted under the head portions. The head portions can be of frusto-conical shape as shown or of domed or spherical shape and each can be hollow and provided with a vent to enable it to be more easily compressed to pass through the aperture in the member 4 or 5. As alternative to making the head portions hollow they can be provided with ribs. The device is made of rubber or polyvinyl chloride and can be made in strip or sheet form with the enlargement or flange forming an integral part of the strip or sheet.
