Abstract

A method of machining free cutting steels comprises the step of removing metal in a machining operation from steel containing Cu in amount greater than 0.06 per cent by weight and N in amount greater than 0.001 per cent by weight. Preferably the Cu content is between 0.06 and 0.6 per cent. The steel may also contain S 0.01-1.0 per cent, P 0.01-0.2 per cent and one or more of Ni, V, Cr and Mo up to 0.05 per cent each. The steel may be worked prior to machining, e.g. by a drawing operation which preferably achieves a reduction of cross sectional area greater than 20 per cent, and then strain relieved at a temperature above 550 DEG F. but below the lower critical temperature. The steels may be low carbon steels with C less than 0.25 per cent, medium carbon steels with C 0.25-0.5 per cent or high carbon steels with C above 0.5 per cent. Cu may be added to the steel as elemental Cu, copper oxygen sulphide, copper sulphide, copper sulphate or as a master alloy containing copper such as an iron-copper-sulphur alloy. Specifications 761,150, 761,151 [both in Group XXII] are referred to.
