814,971. Casting-machines. BRENNAN, J. B. Feb. 24, 1956, No. 5784/56. Addition to 732,115. Class 83 (1). A method of casting consists in passing the metal from a crucible 6 into a casting-chamber 40, via an intermediate crucible 41, whilst subject to a pressure different from atmospheric. The apparatus in Fig. 1 is similar to that in Fig. 1 of the parent Specification, except that the chamber 40 has a mould 19 supported on a floor 20 movable by hydraulic means 18. In operation, the crucible 6, say, is charged with material which is melted whilst the surrounding chamber 4 is evacuated through the connection 10. The mould is heated and a plug 14 is released to allow the material to flow into the crucible 41. During its passage it may pass along a spiral trough as a particulate stream to effect rapid de-gassing. A plug 43 is then operated to allow the metal to pass to the mould 19. Subsequently the floor is lowered and the mould removed whilst the crucible 7 is prepared. An inert gas may be admitted through the connection 10, and cooling and heating coils may be provided in the chamber 40.
