Abstract
Amino substituted cross-linked polystyrene resins are prepared by condensing a chloromethylated cross-linked polystyrene resin with hexamine to produce a resin containing hexamethylene tetrammonium chloride residues. The chloromethylated polystyrene cross-linked, for example with divinyl benzene and/or ether is heated with hexamine in a solvent such as ethanol, chloroform, dimethyl formamide, and dioxane. Sodium bromide or iodide may optionally be added to the condensation reaction to promote formation of quaternary salt. The products may be washed with warm chloroform, aqueous alcohol and dried and the resins treated with formic or acetic acid; by a stream of anhydrous hydrogen chloride; by refluxing with concentrated hydrochloric acid, or 0.88 ammonia solution; or by standing overnight in alcohol saturated with hydrochloric acid. The resins may be used as intermediates for, or as ion-exchange resins.
