Abstract

A cation-exchange membrane, preferably comprising finely ground cation-exchange material such as a sulphonated cross-linked polymer of styrene or a cross-linked polymer of methacrylic acid dispersed in a plastic matrix, e.g. polythene, has absorbed upon it complex cations of a quaternary ammonium compound possessing antibacterial and/or antifungal properties, such as decamethylene-bis-4-aminoquinaldinium chloride. The membrane may be used in the moist form as a dressing or it may form the facing of a backed dressing. The membrane is prepared by first charging the cation-exchange material with ions readily exchangeable for quaternary ammonium ions and then treating the membrane with the quaternary ammonium compound in the form of the chloride. The exchangeable ions may be alkali-metal ions or preferably hydrogen ions from successive treatments with an acid such as hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. In the case of the hydrogen-charged membrane the free-acid formed during the exchange reaction is preferably removed or neutralized as it is formed, conveniently by absorption on an anion-exchange resin. The exchange may be conveniently carried out by treating the hydrogen-charged membrane with an anion-exchange resin in the free base form and a powdered quaternary ammonium salt (e.g. chloride) at least partly in solution in a mixture of methanol and water.
