Abstract

Tryptophan hydantoin of the formula <FORM:0982727/C2/1> is produced by heating b - (hydanto - 5 - yl) - propionaldehyde of formula <FORM:0982727/C2/2> in a solution containing a strong acid. The strong acid, preferably at 0.01 to 0.5 Normal, may be hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, benzene sulphonic acid, toluene sulphonic acid, oxalic acid, formic acid or a strong cation exchange resin. The solvent may be water, methanol, ethanol, acetic acid or an aqueous solution thereof, and the reaction temperature is maintained at 60 DEG to 100 DEG C.
