In the combination an absorbent pad 1 is secured to the head 2 at one end of a long handle 4 whilst a brush 10 is mounted on a back 9 that is connected to a linkage so supported on the handle that when the linkage is actuated the brush-carrying back is swung from an out of use position alongside the handle to first lie under and then to press up against the pad. This last movement squeezes moisture out of the pad whilst presenting the brush, now firmly supported against the pad and thus the head, for use. The back 9 is supported from and at right angles to a pair of longitudinal slotted arms 8. The slots 14 embrace a pin 15 projecting through the socket 3 connecting the head and the handle 4. A second pin 13, parallel to the pin 15, is secured in the lower ends of the arms 8 and slides in a slot or slots 7 in the socket 3, these slots being parallel to the axis of the socket. The lower end of a hand operated toggle linkage 16, 19 secured to the upper end of the handle 4 and hooked around the pin 13 completes the linkage.
