Abstract
814,287. Pipe joints. GERDTS, H. R., and GERDTS, F. May 3, 1956 [July 4, 1955], No. 19265/55. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A non-return valve adapted to be interposed between pipe flanges comprises a thin closure plate 3 coacting with a seating 1 towards which it is urged by a frusto-conical spring 5 bearing against a thin stroke-limiting plate 6 and formed so that its coils lie in a single plane when the valve is fully open. As shown, the seating 1 is formed on an insert 22 contained within housing 11 and formed internally with three guide ribs 8 for the valve and stroke-limiting plates, the latter plate being retained by a spring ring 7 engaging grooves 9 in the ribs. The housing has two or more threaded bores 12 to receive screws 14 by which the valve is secured to a pipe flange 13 and cut away portions 15 through which pass bolts 16 which secure a pipe flange 2 to the upper side of the valve. The insert 22 has a flange 23 housed in a recess 28 in the housing to prevent the insert from being ejected when the pipe flange 2 is removed. Packing washers 4, 18 are interposed between the valve housing and the pipe flanges. The valve may be used for controlling steam condensate and the insert may be made of corrosion resistant material, e.g. a copper alloy, whilst the housing is made of cast iron. The insert may be cast within the housing in which case the latter is provided with dovetail-shaped recesses, or projections to key with the insert. Alternatively if the insert has a higher melting point than the housing, e.g. if the insert is made of stainless steel, the housing may be cast around the insert. In a further modification the housing is provided with a lateral passageway opening to the main passage through the valve at a point below the seating whilst in another modification two non-return valve units opening in the same direction are mounted in a single housing which has a lateral passage opening between the two valve plates.
